I just finished my motorcycle school lessons and i am about to take my test. Would you buy a brand new first bike ( full insurance coverage and warranty and i will keep it for many years ) or would you buy a second hand one ? I am thinking of getting a 690 Duke, 701 Husky, 690 SMC-R, and a FZ-07 ( these are the brand new options) or a 690 KTM SM , Ducati 696 Monster, or a xt660x as my second hand options ( they all have high miles and are on average 8 years old).

What would you do and which one would you get?

Thank you !

I bought my first bike brand new because I didn’t want to deal with the used sport bikes and the terrible things their owners did to them. Looking back I should have bought used to save money, but I still have that bike 9 years later as a secondary ride. Almost everyone on here will tell you that the 690/701s will make a terrible first bike. The FZ might be ok and same with the Duc. Generally buying a Ducati as a first bike(even the small ones) screams bad idea.

used. and OF the used, the XT. the KTM and duc arent reliable and a decently attracive target for theives (esp in bucharest unfortunetly...if you were in like onesti or a smaller town I would have said KTM)

that said, i would say to avoid over 500 on your first bike. its romania, you wont need much, and a CBR500F (as an example) would be way better suited to that. easier on maintenance and fuel too.

your not going to fit comfortably on anything at that height without some mods.

luckily this is the bike world. a new set of rear sets and a handle bar and your good to go.

You can probably size up due to frame fitting issues (I’m going to guess you weigh a bit more than an average height person as well. It doesn’t really mitigate the power too much, but it does help some) I’m gonna guess that something in an adventure sport with the higher height would fit your frame better. There was a link to a program that would model how different heights look on various bikes at one point...maybe Peter remembers where it can be found.

I mean I walked up to a Grom and at 6'2" I decided some things just aren’t doable unless I am in a Shriner’s parade.

Thank you ! Oh and the fact that the bikes are a target for thieves is quite minimised by the fact that i live across the street from the police HQ and the entire street is under constant video surveillance

Well, time for me to hop in here and defend the Ducati. Love mine (620), the 696 is still one of the aircooled bikes which are quite robust, unlike the old 748,916 and etc. That is provided you do your own labor because finding someone to do the work on the Duc won’t be cheap.
